Care That Fits a Family's Week

For many Tecumseh families, weekdays are full: school, practices, rehearsals, jobs, and everything in between. Finding time for a teen's mental health care can feel like one more thing to squeeze into an already crowded calendar.

Tuesday and Wednesday sessions run until 6 pm, which can make it easier to meet outside class time. Telehealth can remove the drive entirely on busy days, while the Clinton office is close by when an in-person visit feels right.

Some families like to schedule the first evaluation in person at the Clinton office so the teen can meet Claudia face to face, then shift to telehealth for follow-up visits once everyone is comfortable. Others start with telehealth from the start. Either approach works, and the format can change as the family's schedule changes through the school year.

When a Teen Seems Different

Parents are often the first to notice that something has changed. A teen may be struggling to keep up with schoolwork, sleeping at odd hours, pulling away from friends or activities they once enjoyed, or seeming more irritable or worried than usual. These changes do not point to any one explanation, and they are worth understanding.

The teens page explains how psychiatric care works for adolescents ages 13 to 17, including how a teen and parent are both part of the process.

If you are unsure whether what you are seeing is typical adolescence or something more, you do not need to decide on your own. A free 15-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to describe what you have noticed and ask whether an evaluation makes sense. Teens are welcome to join that call, too.

What a Teen Evaluation Involves

A 60-minute psychiatric evaluation usually includes time with both the teen and a parent or guardian, and sometimes time with the teen alone. Questions cover mood, worry, focus, sleep, school, friendships, physical health, and family history. Claudia may consider whether anxiety, ADHD, or depression could be part of the picture.

Balancing a teen's privacy with a parent's role is discussed openly at the start, including what would always be shared, such as any concern about safety.

Teens are encouraged to ask their own questions.

Balancing School and Activities

Teens involved in sports, music, work, or other commitments often feel pressure to keep everything going. Care can look at sleep, stress, nutrition, and daily rhythm through Functional & Integrative Psychiatry, alongside any other part of the plan. Small, realistic changes tend to fit better than sweeping ones, especially during a busy season.

Medication is one possible tool, never a requirement. Decisions are made together with the teen and parent based on symptoms, goals, and comfort level. When therapy would help, Claudia provides referrals to trusted therapists and specialists.

Plans can be adjusted as seasons change, such as during exams, tryouts, or summer breaks, so care stays realistic for the teen and the family.

Care for Parents Too

Supporting a teen can be draining, and sometimes it prompts a parent to reflect on their own stress, sleep, or mood. Adults in Tecumseh can seek their own evaluation as well, with the same choice of the Clinton office or telehealth.

The working adults and parents page describes how care can fit around jobs and family responsibilities.
